Fun Times at Lake Morey Winter Weekend

January 15, 2010

Lake Morey was the place to be last weekend for winter fun! Over 165 people came out to the Trails Alliance’s annual Skate-a-thon fundraiser on Saturday,  held at Lake Morey Resort.  We even met people that traveled to Skate-a-thon  from Chicago and Atlantic City to experience the Lake Morey Skating Trail.

Thanks to our partnership with the Resort and Hulbert Outdoor Center, Barry Larson (Resort staff) kept check on ice conditions on the lake over the past two weeks as we approached the weekend event, trying to locate areas thick enough to get ice maintenance equipment safely onto the lake. A two mile loop of 6″ thick solid black ice was cleared of snow on the south end of the lake and by Thursday the 7th, Barry was busy planning a connecting route to the north.

Ice did not form uniformily across the lake this year due to some windy days during initial freeze up so navigating a safe route took some time as ice thickness of 4″ or greater was sought. By Saturday morning , over three miles of skateable trail were open.  Barry continued through Saturday opening more skating trail to be ready for the next days WinterFest. Over 525 people came to Hulbert Outdoor Center to enjoy story-telling, music, dog sledding demos, old fashioned lake ice-cutting, nordic skating, x-country skiing, winter camping demos and more.

Monies raised at Lake Morey Winter Weekend support the maintenance of the longest ice skating trail in the country- over 4.5 miles of skateable trail.

Consider donating to the cause.

Thanks to all of you that came out to have some winter fun on January 9th and 10th.

Thanks also to the support of the many volunteers, Nordic Skater and Boloco Inspired Burritos for your contributions to this successful weekend.

Take a peek at some of the fun from Skate-a-thon 2010 posted on You Tube.
